CHARITY, n. In a general sense, love, benevolence, good will; that disposition of heart which inclines men to think favorably of their fellow men to think favorably of their fellow men, and to do them good. In a theological sense, it includes supreme love to God, and universal good will to men. GOODNESS, n. Kindness; benevolence; benignity of heart; but more generally, acts of kindness; charity; humanity exercised. I shall remember his goodness to me with gratitude. Since last week's horrific earthquake and tsunamis, we have been inundated with images of death and destruction. And once again, I am amazed at the outpouring of help from people all over the world.
And then, you hear the criticism by some in the UN and other places, complaining that the United States is not being generous enough... that we are "stingy." And anger rises up and I feel like screaming, "How dare you?!?"
And then, you hear that the suicide bombings continue... and the attacks on our American soldiers by terrorists continue... and Osama calls for boycotting the elections... and the UN and others do not stand up and defend us. And anger rises up and I feel like screaming, "What is this insanity?!?"
You would think that all the pain and devastation and hopelessness in the face of this unimaginable act of nature would give pause to those who hate... those who have stupid political agendas... those with inane axes to grind. Sadly, the same event that brings out the best in people, is once again demonstrating that there is real evil. That men can respond to despair with hatred, and that instead of thanks and gratitude, some express presumption and judgment. Amazing!
In the end, the United States will continue to be the most generous contributor. When all the private donations are added to the public aid, along with all the military assistance, the Americans will once again prove to be decent, honorable, caring, giving. And in spite of what the rest of the world might say... Americans know that they answer not to people, but to their own consciences and to their God. If you would like to help, please visit PrayerCentral.net, and consider giving to local ministries with a proven record of accountability, led by those who will still be there when many others are gone. I have known the family running PrayerCentral for many years, and can vouch for their integrity and their honesty. Thank you.
Have a blessed week.
