This past week, January 27, we remembered the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auswitch. Not much media coverage... actually, I found it hard to find anything on this in a google search. I go back to last week's column 01-24-05, many in today's world have forgotten even recent history!
You see, if we remember Auswitch, we have to remember the American GI's who died liberating Europe. And let's not forget the Asian countries... we also fought on that front. The total number of American deaths in WW II is estimated at 33,741. In the Pacific, by July of 1945, the Japanese had caused the death of approximately 60,000 American soldiers. Do we consider these deaths in vain? Why are there still American troops in Germany? How much money did the US give to the reconstruction of Europe and Asia?
But, today, when an American President once again calls the United States to stand for freedom, life, and dignity, the naysayers call him warmonger and ignorant. When he declares that the Iraqis deserve a chance at democracy, at self-determination, we are bombarded with explanation about why the Middle-Eastern mentality will never "get" the concept of free elections. And when President Bush declares that women in that part of the world deserve to have a voice... the silence coming from NOW and Steinem, and many the other feminists "speaks" for itself.
But then there was Sunday, January 30, 2005.
The Iraqi people, filled with equal doses of courage and hope, risked their lives (and in many cases the lives of their children), to go out and vote. There are some things that are not simply "human nature." We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.* This is the REAL reason President Bush believes in the War on Iraq. This is the WHY our young men and women are risking their lives in a foreign soil. Because, all men are created equal and they are all endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, including Liberty.
All truth transcends opinions, ideology, agendas... even personal beliefs. Truth does not depend on humans to give it value, or to affirm its validity. Truth stands alone. As the week progresses, and the popular media continues to ignore the true worth of our sacrifices in the Middle East (the elections are not even meriting mention in this afternoon's (01-31-05) AOL front news page), remember... debate... converse... engage. The people in Iraq are willing to die in order to have their voices be heard... use the freedom YOU have as an inalienable right to voice out the truth of what is happening in the world around you.
