FANTASY, n. the power or process of creating especially unrealistic or improbable mental images in response to psychological need (Merrian-Webster Online Dictionary) - mental images or imaginary narratives that distort or entirely depart from reality (Encyclopedia Britannica Online) DELUSION, n. false representation; illusion; error or mistake proceeding from false views (Webster's 1828 Dictionary) Sorry... had to keep the fantasy definition. It seems to be the theme of the times.
Giuliana Sgrena, the journalist working for an Italian Communist newspaper... an opponent of the war in Iraq, and an avowed anti-American, is alive and well.
Thanks to negotiations with her kidnappers, the woman was released, and was on her way to the airport, back to Italy, when the car she was riding was fired upon by American troops. The man who negotiated her release died, and she was injured.
Now, it seems that Ms. Sgrena has decided that her release was such an insult to American sensibilities, that soldiers were ordered to ambush her. Never mind that the road the car was driving is one of the most dangerous areas, that suicide bombers are well known frequenters of the area. What exactly happened... we will probably never know.
However, one thing is sure. To think that Ms. Sgrena is an international figure worthy of political intrigue and murderous plots is pretty amazing thinking. Maybe the time spent in captivity has affected her grasp of reality... we'll give her that as an out. But for anyone else to believe that American soldiers would waste their bullets and purposely create a situation that would compromise them and their mission... well... I call that fantasy and delusion.
Then again, lately, fantasy and delusion seem to be the rule, rather than the exception, when analyzing current events.
Have a blessed week.
