GRIEF ,n. The pain of mind produced by loss, misfortune, injury or evils of any kind; sorrow; regret. EXPECT'ING, ppr. Waiting or looking for the arrival of. (All definitions taken from Webster's 1828 Dictionary) It hit me today. As I continually checked the news, waiting to hear if Terri Schiavo had died, it hit me.
See, I have two friends... one finally gave birth to a beautiful baby boy... about a week late. The other, is a few days late. Forty one years ago, Terri's mother was waiting... waiting for the birth of her daughter. Today, she is waiting for her death.
Interesting, how the word "expecting" can take such a wide range of meaning. From expectant mother, expecting the joy of a new baby... to expecting the death of this same child.
At this point in time, there is no hope for recovery, no hope of rescuing this young woman from a painful, very inhumane death. Yes, painful and inhumane. In spite of the medical opinions which state that death by starvation is peaceful, painless (how do they know these things?), it is incredibly inhumane to deny a living being of the most basic sustenance needed for survival.
The point is not even is it painful; neither is it an issue of death. For Christians, death is victory... the issue is life. For our society, life has become a burden, only beauty and perfection and wholeness count. We have stopped valuing life.
But not this mother... not this father... for them, their child's life still has value, and until the end, they will hope against hope.
Have a blessed week.
