RELI'ANCE, n. [from rely.] Rest or repose of mind, resulting from a full belief of the veracity or integrity of a person, or of the certainty of a fact; trust; confidence; dependence. CONSCIENTIOUS, a. Influenced by conscience; governed by a strict regard to the dictates of conscience, or by the known or supposed rules of right and wrong; as a conscientious judge. (All definitions taken from Webster's 1828 Dictionary) (I was out of town all last week, and am catching up, so this week's column is a bit late.)
Illegal immigrants... foreign workers... American unemployment.
I was listening to one of the "talking heads" on the radio. The discussion centered around all the illegal workers that are "taking" all the jobs that should be available to American workers. Mr. Talking Head is missing the point.
I know someone who works placing Hispanic workers in both the construction field and in factories. They process them, make sure their documents are valid. Believe me, they charge, a lot, for their services. Their fees make the hourly rate of each one of these workers a lot higher than minimum wage.
I know another person who works with construction contractors. She helps provide training for their workers... in Spanish. The need for classes in Spanish is growing.
Do you know what the common denominator is here? Why would employers pay so much more for these workers? Why do they specifically ask that "No whites or blacks" be sent to them? Because the sad fact is that our American labor force does not have a clue what hard work and productivity are.
The construction contractors know that he Hispanics they hire, though more expensive, will produce at such a rate that their higher fees are worth it. They are skilled, and have a high work ethic. They get the job done. The big problem with the workers, actually, is that they take such risks that they are injured more frequently... the concept of job safety is not familiar to them... thus the training classes. On more ironic note, neither are they familiar with the concept of breaks and one hour lunches. They just want to get the job done and move on to the next work site. Some of the classes cover the laws in force at these sites, laws like required work breaks.
In contrast, we have raised a generation of young people who have no concept of what hard work, responsibility, conscientiousness is. It is a very real possibility that, for the American economy to grow and thrive, we will need to continue importing a foreign work force. The question is... what will happen when these workers learn "the American way?"
Have a blessed week.
