INSPIRATION,n. a divine influence or action on a person believed to qualify him or her to receive and communicate sacred revelation b : the action or power of moving the intellect or emotions c : the act of influencing or suggesting opinions MOTIVATE, V. to provide with a motive MOTIVE, n. something (as a need or desire) that causes a person to act (Definition taken from Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary) I think that the world around us has lost its inspiration.
It seems that people are just existing; like John Lennon sang: "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."
Where is the excitement? Where is the enthusiasm? Where is the joie de vivre?
ENJOY'MENT, n. Pleasure; satisfaction; agreeable sensations; fruition. (Definition taken from Webster's 1828 Dictionary) For years I assumed that people wanted their lives to be an exciting adventure. And so, I would suggest, in order to enjoy this adventure filled life, they needed to accept the difficulties and trials, the "dragons" that might appear as they explored the forest of their lives. Recently, I've come to realize that I may have mis-read most people.
It appears that many are actually satisfied with oatmeal lifestyles. Routine is good... boring is acceptable... mediocrity satisfies.
What is at the root of this awful lack of excitement? Is it a lack of ambition? Is it fear? Is it that the self-centered existence so many seem to be specializing in is starting to bear fruit?
If you look to yourself to satisfy your deepest longings; and think that you will find great depth in your inner man... I am starting to realize, you will be sorely disappointed. It may be that the blandness that seems to be overtaking us is based on so much navel gazing that people are becoming near-sighted. And when you are near-sighted, you miss out on the wonders of the world around you.
Years ago, when our son first got glasses, he marveled at what he had been missing out on. We walked around and he kept looking at the details in the distance, things that he didn't realize until that moment, were not fuzzy blurs, but crisp, wonderfully intricate. A near-sighted person will never appreciate the wonder of a tree... they can only see up close, maybe a branch at a time, maybe just individual leaves. They will never marvel at starry skies, clouds, waves crashing off shore against a rocky outcrop.
And near-sighted people will never be inspired to reach out, travel forth, explore, move up and out... to seek the unimaginable and inspiring in the world beyond. They seek god within, and miss out on the God that is around.
A full-sighted person will marvel at a grain of sand, a snowflake, a tiny ant... AND at the distant sunset. And a full-sighted person will seek the Creator in the world He created, and invite Him to dwell inside... knowing that by looking up and out, the intimate relationship growing in their heart, will deepen. And as intimacy deepens, so will wisdom, understanding, and revelation.
Be inspired... look out.
Have a blessed week.
