On Being Stupid

CLUELESSNESS, adj. completely or hopelessly bewildered, unaware, ignorant, or foolish

ANNOY, v. to disturb or irritate especially by repeated acts

  • synonyms ANNOY, VEX, IRK, BOTHER mean to upset a person's composure. ANNOY implies a wearing on the nerves by persistent petty unpleasantness (their constant complaining annoys us). VEX implies greater provocation and stronger disturbance and usually connotes anger but sometimes perplexity or anxiety (vexed by her teenager's failure to pick up his room). IRK stresses difficulty in enduring and the resulting weariness or impatience of spirit (careless waste irks the boss). BOTHER suggests interference with comfort or peace of mind (don't bother me while I'm reading).

JANE FONDA, n. clueless, annoying, vexink, irking, bothering Hollywood intellectual-wannabe.

(Some Definitions from Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary. )

Ok... that's not very charitable... but few things offend me as much as stupidity and ignorance.

So Jane Fonda is deluded into believing that she has something to add to the discussion on Iraq. And she is going to do this by going cross country in a vegetable oil powered bus.

Yes, the very same "Hanoi Jane" that giggled while sitting in an anti-aircraft artillery gun used to shoot down American soldiers. So now, she has decided that she should spend the next few months rousing people's emotions against the war in Iraq.

Now, mind you, I am a firm believer in the First Ammendment, and I support Hanoi Ja.. oops, Jane Fonda's freedom to speak out against the war. What annoys me is that she truly believes that she is doing this "for the troops,".

So, ok, I believe that there are American soldiers that oppose the war, and I believe Ms. Fonda when she says that some of them have approached her about it. I'll even give her the possibility that maybe things in Iraq could have been handled differently.

However, where we disagree is in the fact that I don't think Jane Fonda is qualified to speak for ANY American soldier. And I don't think that re-starting the Vietnam era anti-war movement is what this country needs right now.

Maybe the Vietnam war was a mistake... I don't think so... but I don't want to debate it right now. But what I do know is that the division, angst, anger, that this country lived through during the anti-war 60's is not something we need right now.

The enemy we are fighting right now does not believe in boundaries. They don't just want us out of the Middle East, they want us off this earth. They believe we are contaminants, living offenses to their god. Even if we left Iraq, they will still continue working, worldwide, to destroy who we are. This is why they kill other Muslims... in their eyes, anyone who does not believe in what they believe, deserves death.

Was Iraq the best place to fight this war? Well, my theory is that the powers that be had to pick a country that did not have any major Islamic centers, but important enough that the Islamists would be willing to fight infidels trampling on it. They needed one where the leader's demise would not throw off the balance of power of the region. Were there miscalculations? Absolutely... and we probably won't know the whole story for years to come, if ever...

But, for now, I would rather have our soldiers fighting the enemy over there... Jane, STAY HOME.

Have a blessed week.
