STRENGTH, n. Power of mind; intellectual force; the power of any faculty; as strength of memory; strength of reason; strength of judgment. OPINION, n. The judgment which the mind forms of any proposition, statement, theory or event, the truth or falsehood of which is supported by a degree of evidence that renders it probably, but does not produce absolute knowledge or certainty. (Definitions from Webster's 1828 Dictionary. )
Who can figure out this president? Again and again people try to present him as an ignorant troglodyte not in touch with modern society. And again and again he comes up with these unexpected decisions. He surrounds himself with all sorts of people, judging them not by their ethnicity, or their gender, but by their beliefs. Amazingly, it seems that George W. chooses to surround himself with people he personally likes, people he trusts, people whose values parallel his.
And so, once again, we find that this man has chosen an amazingly strong woman to a position of power. Not only that, but it turns out that this strong woman has been among his closest friends and confidants for years. So, it seems, that this man is not only not a racist, he is not a misogynist.
Then again, maybe it all goes back to Barbara. Mothers can empower or destroy their sons. Somehow, Barbara Bush seems to have managed to have raised sons who are not afraid of strong women.
There is a lot we don't know about Harriet Miers... and I'm sure we will soon know a lot more than we ever wanted... For now, though, I am glad that once again, this President has chosen a bright, intelligent, accomplished woman. Like his choice of Condalezza Rice years ago, I hope that Ms. Meier's nomination inspires girls all across this country. I know that the media and the left will not even pause before somehow putting down this latest nomination... but for the next few hours... until the frenzy starts... I will bask in the glow of another strong, conservative, Republican woman.
And, don't forget... just because Katrina and Rita are no longer front page news, the agencies that provide relief to those still in need, are still in need of YOUR help: The Salvation Army, Operation Blessing, American Red Cross.
Have a blessed week.
