Over the past few weeks we have talked about politics, about the media, about the American public... This week, let's talk about something totally different...
FRIEND, n. One who entertains for another sentiments of esteem, respect and affection, which lead him to desire his company, and to seek to promote his happiness and prosperity. We can't change our family. I mean, we dont' choose them, we get them... and then, we can't really get rid of them. They are our family for ever and ever. Sure, we can move away, stop talking to them, but they are still our family. And for good or bad, they will always be a part of our lives.
It's different with friends.
I don't think we choose friends, I think we sort of find them. Friends are people we care about... and who care about us. We don't necessarily know them from childhood, we can have them, for a season, and then move on. But good friends last. A friend knows you, I mean, really knows you, and still likes you. A good friend lets you be you, and doesn't try to change you.
As the definition above says, a friends seeks to promote your happiness and prosperity. A good friend is happy when you are happy.
According to Proverbs 19:28, "there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother."
But probably the most amazing verse about friendship is found in James 2:23,
referring to Abraham,
How important are friends? Well, if God is able to find a friend, to cherish a friend... I think that makes friends pretty important, and very, very valuable.
Do you have any good friends? You should.
