LIE, n. A criminal falsehood; a falsehood uttered for the purpose of deception; an intentional violation of truth. Fiction, or a false statement or representation, not intended to deceive, mislead or injure, as in fables, parables and the like, is not a lie.
HONESTY, n. In principle, an upright disposition; moral rectitude of heart; a disposition to conform to justice and correct moral principles, in all social transactions. In fact, upright conduct; an actual conformity to justice and moral rectitude. TRUTH, n. Conformity to fact or reality; exact accordance with that which is, or has been, or shall be. The truth of history constitutes its whole value. We rely on the truth of the scriptural prophecies.
((Definitions taken from Webster's 1828 Dictionary.)
Once again we are facing issues of truth, lies and politics. And once again, we are being let down by many of the politicians... on BOTH sides of the political landscape. The Democrats on the left, are the ultimate in hypocrisy, acting in total outrage that the Vice-President's Chief of Staff may have lied. Never mind that these same people were so willing to overlook the President's lies, under oath, more than once.
The Republicans, on the right, are as appalling. Just a few years ago some of them correctly and ethically insisted that lying under oath, regardless of who lied, is an offense that should be investigated and prosecuted. But now, it's the "well, if their guy did it... why can't our guy do it?"
Now, mind you, I don't believe for a moment that "revealing" the name of a no longer undercover agent, one who had actually authorized her own husband's trip to a restricted country (thus leaving herself open to investigation), is a huge offense. Regardless, a lie is a lie, and I would have hoped that those who claim to stand for righteousness, would.
On another note, I am already thinking that I may have to stop watching/reading the news for the next couple of months... I don't know if I can handle the posturing, absurd debates, and character assassination that will surround Judge Alito's confirmation process.
The President takes a stand and actually, finally, makes good on a promise he made during his campaign... and the other side freaks. Sorry, President Bush was elected to represent those who elected him, that's what a Republic is... and thus... no one should be surprised that he is behaving in a way that pleases that constituency. It's not called pandering, it's called doing what you said you would.
And speaking of President Bush, I saw him this past week. I was able to attend his most recent speech in Norfolk, VA. It was an honor, it was exciting. He was funny, challenging, and realistic. How sad that his message is not being reported by the media. It sure makes sense to me. Reality is not the easy black and white formulation many would like it to be. There is true evil out there, and they hate us... Whether we are in Iraq or not... they still want us dead. And regardless of how nice the Israelis make with the Palestinians... they want them dead, too.
Finally, I will be out of the country for the next two weeks... please keep me in your prayers.
Have a blessed week.
And, please, don't forget... the agencies that provide relief to those still in need, are still in need of YOUR help: The Salvation Army, Operation Blessing, American Red Cross.
