TRUTH, n. Conformity to fact or reality; exact accordance with that which is, or has been, or shall be.
One of the central issues to this election was the whole concept of truth. Who represented the truth, who lied, who didn't.
However, much more important than who said what, is the still-being-debated representation of what America and Americans are really like. One of the issues that I find most fascinating in the whole Islamist vs. West war is the view many Moslem leaders in the Arab world have of the West, and in particular, of the United States. For them we are a nation of perverts, who don't believe in marriage, who support homosexuality and sexual perversions, who have no religion, don't believe in discipline or family values, and who are pacifist weaklings unwilling to die for what we believe in. Basically, the mullahs think all Americans are liberals.
However, a few events in recent times must be giving pause to many of these America hating Islamists.
The first occurred on September 11, 2001.
A group of passengers in a hijacked plane, aware of what their fate would be, took it upon themselves to stop the madness. Ordinary Americans chose to sacrifice their lives to protect our nation. Knowing the intent of the murderers who had taken control of their plane, they chose to fight back... and from that day on... hijacking American planes had to be crossed out of the possible means of terrorizing the USA. I can only imagine what must have gone through the cowardly masterminds of the attacks on America on that fateful day... as it turns out... average Americans did have the guts to die for what they believed in... and they needed no hedonistic promises of sexual orgies in the afterlife. They did it because these Americans knew right and wrong, and they chose to stand for right, and for freedom, even if it cost them their lives. Theirs was true sacrifice and martyrdom, dying for a just cause, that others might live.
These elections posed a similar choice. The terrorists were led to believe that Americans would bow down to foreign pressure, and choose peace-keeping over peace-making. Osama even tried using Michael Moore's own words to sway votes. Once again, SURPRISE!. Common, everyday Americans rose up and said, no. This is not who we are. We are people of honor, we are people of values, we are people of integrity. And, yes, we do want to send a message to the world.
We don't care what France or Germany or the UN thinks... we do what we believe is right. We are not going to allow terror to decide our elections. And in the midst of all the political turmoil, we will also stand for God, for family, for the sanctity of marriage, and yes, we will back up a president that believes in killing those who would seek to destroy us.
Ironically, in spite of all the lip service the left gives to negotiations... the election results will actually open wide an unexpected door of mediation. President Bush can now go to moderate Moslem leaders all around the world and encourage them to teach their followers that the average American can and will stand for righteousness, that they know and understand right from wrong, and that they have chosen the common values of decency and traditional precepts.
Ironic and unexpected and to some degree surprising. But then again, in this day and age, truth is so scarce as to have become a rare and valuable commodity. Thankfully, though, in the end, truth prevailed.
