Contempt

CONTEMPT, n. The act of despising; the act of viewing or considering and treating as mean, vile and worthles; disdain.

Arafat has died. The father of terrorism is dead.

Two weeks ago 11-07-04 we looked at the historical background behind the Palestinian/Israeli conflict.

For those who still think that we can negotiate peace, please note that according to the Palestinian National Charter, "The liberation of Palestine... is a national duty... and aims at the elimination of Zionism in Palestine." Palestinians do not recognize, nor will they ever recognize anything but Arab/Palestinian control over the land. As we saw on a previous column 07-25-04, "For some Islamists, 'any land which has once been part of the Muslim community should forever remain under Muslim rule.'"

The Islamists will not rest until every trace of Jewish and Christian presence is removed from what they consider holy, Muslim land.

It is going to be a long, arduous battle.

And speaking of battles... I recently read an interesting commentary on the election results ( Renaissance Women).

The premise is that there are lessons to be learned from Elijah's victory at Mt. Carmel. There are also warnings. Here's my take.

The reason Elijah was depressed and fearing for his life, was that, in spite of the magnificent, awesome display of God's power, Jezebel's heart was not changed. He failed to realize that winning one battle does not mean the war is won.

As Christians, we would like to believe that if people only saw the truth of God's power, they would have a change of heart. They would be won to the Lord's side.

In truth, miracles don't save. They may open the door to a skeptic, seeking heart, but salvation, a true change in a person's being, does not happen this way.

It is the work of the Holy Spirit; and it is initiated by the Holy Spirit. Salvation comes from God... a free gift.

We have entered a new battle. Yes, we know who will win this war in the end, but, as we are seeing in the news, at times, righteous victories only serve to embolden the opposition. Watch the news since the election, and you will see disdain and contempt. We won one battle, but it is just one battle.

Conservative Christians need to stay strong, focused, sharp. There are many more battles to be fought.

Have a blessed week.
