INTEGRITY, n. The entire, unimpaired state of any thing, particularly of the mind; moral soundness or purity; incorruptness; uprightness; honesty. Integrity comprehends the whole moral character, but has a special reference to uprightness in mutual dealings, transfers of property, and agencies for others.
(Definition taken from Webster's 1828 Dictionary.)
INTEGRITY, n. firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values
(Definition taken from Merriam-Webster OnLine Dictionary.)
According to Merriam-Webster's online dictionary site the most looked up word for 2005 was "integrity."
This week's column will be short... but hopefully, it will get you thinking.
Many people will wonder why "integrity" is the number one word in this list. Some have lamented that the lack of integrity has resulted in people not even knowing what it means. I would agree with that. If you don't care about truth... why would you care about integrity?
My lament, however, relates to the definition of the word in question. Please go back to the top and read both definitions again. On the one hand we have the 1828 dictionary's definition. Then we have the "modern" definition... Hmmmm...
Have a blessed week.
And, please, don't forget... the agencies that provide relief to those still in need, are still in need of YOUR help: The Salvation Army, Operation Blessing, American Red Cross.
