by Georgie Márquez-André September 6, 2004 I celebrated my 48th birthday yesterday! So, what did I do for my birthday? I completed my second half marathon... 13.1 miles.
For the past few months two friends and I have been training for this event.
It has been a great time of fellowship, encouragement, and just good friendship.
So what did I learn through all of this?
That training is important... that you are never as prepared as you think you are... that circumstances can affect even the best laid out plans. We were doing great, keeping a pace that would get us to the finish line within our hoped for time. The we hit mile 9, THE WALL.
And even though we knew that this would be the hardest stretch... we were still overwhelmed
by the head winds, the heat, and the very real exhaustion.
Am I upset? No... I am very proud that I was able to finish. I am so grateful that I had the physical strength to meet the challenge. Mostly, I am grateful that I was able to share this time with two very good friends. BUT... the lesson is: We did not train as we should have, and knew it. We did not start our long runs early enough, and knew it.
We finished, we got the medal, we accomplished the goal... Next year, though... just wait!
Have a blessed week! (I'll be at oceanfront... resting!)
